National Parents Day

In 1994 President Bill Clinton signed into law the resolution and adopted by the U.S. Congress establishing the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents Day. On this day, many choose to spend quality time with their parents reminiscing about their lives together and talking about family members that are no longer with them.

Here are two ideas for spending Parent’s Day with Mom and Dad.

Pull out old photo albums and discuss what is happening in some of the pictures when they were taken. Consider taking notes on the back of each photo to share with your children to keep these family moments alive.

Find Mom or Dad’s cookbook and find that favorite family recipe you loved eating together growing up. Celebrate the day with as many family members cooking this meal. Don’t forget to make copies of the recipe for everyone to take home.

As parents age, you want to make sure they are safe and well cared for. Many in the Sandwich generation find it difficult to care full-time for their parents, excel in their careers and run their household. Here are Five Primary Reasons to consider in-home care.

Primary Reason 1 – Changes in personal appearance and household cleanliness typically indicate a shift in physical and or mental status

Primary Reason 2 – Unexplained bruising or injuries

Primary Reason 3 – Uncertainty and confusion when performing once-familiar tasks

Primary Reason 4 – Difficulty with walking, balance, mobility and getting up from a seated position

Primary Reason 5 – Consistent use of poor judgment (e.g., falling for scams or sales pitches, giving away money)
